About Softwood

Softwood trees are fast growing, coniferous trees that stays evergreen. They are more flexible, lighter in weight, and less dense than most hardwood. Softwood trees consist of Spruce, Pine, Cedar, Western Red Cedar, Larch, and Fir. Softwood is typically used for interior mouldings, windows, doors, construction framing and generating sheet goods such as plywood and fibreboard, providing a seamless and stunning finish.

About Rubber Wood

Rubber trees grow in abundance in Africa, Central and South America, and Asia. The wood is a light-coloured, medium density tropical hardwood. As rubber wood has little shrinkage, it serves as an excellent material for furniture, cabinets, kitchen woodenware, and toys. Rubber wood is regarded as ‘eco-friendly’ as the wood is harvested from plantation trees that no longer produce latex. It is mainly for indoor uses as it is moisture absorbent. However, with proper treatment, they may be used outdoors as well.

Popular in Europe and gradually gaining attention in the rest of the world, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) stands out for its strength, appearance, versatility, and sustainability. CLT is a large-scale, prefabricated, solid engineered wood panel. It is light weight, yet very strong, and serves as reliable building material.

Although concrete and steel have been regarded as best options for many years, the use of mass timber actually dates back to well before the 7th century. Despite being five times lighter than concrete, CLT has comparable strength per weight ratio to concrete, and the multi-layer wood panel spans in two directions. Each layer is placed cross-wised to the adjacent layers to increase its stability and strength. This way, it also helps to dissipate seismic forces, largely reducing cost of damage and increasing life safety in earthquake prone areas.

Building with CLT also allows for quicker installation time, greater quality control, and a significant reduction in waste.

  • Cedar

Larch is native to places with cooler climate., such as the boreal forest of Siberia and Canada. Larch lumber is valued for being tough, weatherproof, and durable. Top quality larch is used for building of yachts and boats, exterior cladding for buildings and interior panelling. Other uses include heavy structural construction, fences, etc. It is also resistant to rot and diseases.

Spruce is highly durable. They are an important source of lumber for structural end uses, both indoors and outdoors. Spruce is also in popular demand for decorative plywood, veneer, flooring, and carpentry. They are also used as pulp wood for making paper.

Pine is strong and shock-resistant. It also resists shrinking and swelling. Pine wood is well sought after for building furniture, with knotty pine highly desired for decorative effects.

Widely found along coastal British Columbia, Douglas Fir is stable, strong, and useful in framing buildings, and fencing. It is a fine-grained wood ranging from light yellow to reddish in colour.

The Western Red Cedar is best known for its unmistakable red colour and aromatic smell. As it is highly resistant to water, insects, and rot, it is also well sought after for constructing building materials. Commonly found in North American forests, Western Red Cedar features fine, straight grains, flexibility and strength.

Cedar is an aromatic softwood with the hardest Janka rating. It has a natural resistance to rotting. Cedar does not shrink, swell, warp or decay, even with exposure to different elements. It is ideal for providing sound resistance, manufacturing siding, shingles, decking, and fences.
